What is the Overall Process for Obtaining Dental Implants?

Dr. Larsen finds that many patients are curious about what they can expect throughout the process of obtaining dental implants. There are many steps involved that need to be done in order to achieve the result patients desire.

  • Evaluation. First, Dr. Larsen must evaluate patients to determine whether they are a good candidate for this restorative dental treatment. This evaluation process may include dental X-rays, a thorough examination of the mouth and teeth, and discussions about the patient’s overall health and medical history.
  • Tooth implant surgery. Once a patient has been deemed a good candidate for dental implants, they undergo an oral surgical procedure to place the implant into their jawbone. This is usually done under local anesthesia and can take a few hours, depending on how many implants are being placed during the appointment. Precise incisions will be made into the gum tissue, and implants will be placed securely into the jawbone, serving as a sturdy foundation for artificial teeth.
  • Healing and osseointegration. After surgery, patients must allow time for their gums and jawbone to heal before moving on to the next step. This process is known as osseointegration, where the jawbone fuses completely with the dental implant, creating a strong and stable foundation. This can take several months, but it is crucial for the long-term success of one’s dental implants.
  • Abutment placement and impressions. Once osseointegration is complete, patients will return to our office to have abutments placed on top of the implants. These act as connectors between the implant and the artificial tooth or teeth. Impressions will also be taken at this time to create custom-made crowns or bridges that will fit securely onto the abutments.
  • Final restoration and aftercare. Finally, once the custom-made restorations are ready, patients will return for their last appointment, where Dr. Larsen places the crowns or bridges onto the abutments. After this, patients can enjoy their new and improved smile! However, they must continue practicing good oral hygiene habits at home and attend regular check-ups with Dr. Larsen to maintain the health and longevity of their dental implants.
