Dental restorations are often used when patients have a tooth or teeth compromised from trauma, disease, or decay. This includes solutions such as dental crowns and dental onlays. At Chase Inspired Dentistry, Dr. Chase Larsen and his team of professionals help patients choose the most conservative options to restore their smile. When restoring one or more teeth, crowns or onlays are often suggested, but when do I need each one, and which one is most appropriate for my unique situation?
Patients with an affected tooth that requires restoration will want to speak to a restorative dentist like Dr. Larsen to determine the best option for repair. When disease, decay, trauma, or even root canal therapy is performed on a tooth, the tooth’s strength and integrity are impacted. Our team utilizes a dental crown to cover the entire natural tooth to protect it from further damage, which may require removal. A dental onlay, however, is a smaller restoration that is bonded onto a tooth to cover a specific area of it. It is more conservative and requires less removal of healthy tooth enamel to place. Dr. Larsen will choose onlays whenever possible, as they can protect the natural tooth from further damage without removing extensive amounts of the structure.
Dr. Larsen finds that the main elements used to compare the two include the amount of natural tooth removed for replacement, the type of bonding used, the cost of preparation and placement, and the time needed to create the final restoration.
